Sound Guide

This video shows the Russian Alphabet in order, with the IPA symbols that correspond to each letter.

Notice that many consonants have a soft (palatalized) version, and hard (non-palatalized) version. Soft consonants have a little tail to differentiate them from hard consonants. The difference between the soft and hard consonants is subtle, but so important in making you sound like a native speaker!

Our favorite Russian letters are Ы, Ж, Ю and Щ.... watch the video to see how they are pronounced. Have fun!

Fotina Naumenko, DMA

Soprano Fotina Naumenko has been singing in Russian ever since she can remember. Born into a Russian-American family, she has always had a special place in her heart for music of her family's ancestral homeland. Fotina created Russian Aria Resource to make the beautiful, rich Russian operatic repertoire more accessible for non-native speakers.

This project was sponsored by a Fulbright Fellowship, which Fotina completed in St. Petersburg, Russia, at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory.

Fotina is a professional singer and serves as Associate Professor of Voice at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA.
